Speaker: Mary Sherman Reid
90 Days of Flowering Bulbs by Mary Sherman Reid - Planting bulbs is a great way to add tons of color to garden beds for the spring season. There is a huge variety of bulbs available and most of these should be planted in the fall. Mary will share her knowledge of bulbs to provide 90 days of Spring bloom enjoyment, from April till the end of June. She will focus on how to plan your bulb garden, including how to select, plant and maintain these bulbs.

Walk in Ginn’s Ecological Park, Cantley

This park was generously donated to the Municipality of Cantley in 2018 by James and Anne Ginns. Anne was one of our founding members of the Club when the Club started in 1985. She was also our first ever honorary member. She died recently in January 2024.
In honour of Anne, please join us for a lovely afternoon walk in this very special forested park. Enjoy the beauty of the trees as well as the fall colours. We will stop along the way for some refreshments. The walk, along a good trail system, is approximately 3 km long, but can be shorter if you only do one of the two loops.

Topic: Growing Hardy Roses in our Climate

Growing Hardy Roses in our Climate by Judith Cox – The focus will be learning about what roses are hardy in our climate as well as a bit on more tender varieties, such as David Austins and tea roses. Judith will also cover pests and diseases, propagation and winter protection.
Seed Exchange – This is an opportunity for members to bring in seed from your gardens to share with other members. Please label the packages with name, height, light conditions etc.

Christmas Wreath Workshop led by Helen Mackinnon - Helen is a long time Gatineau Valley Gardener member who has a lot of experience making beautiful Christmas arrangements and front door wreaths. Please join this workshop to create your own Xmas wreath that you will be able to take home with you. Christmas goodies will be served!

As the weather becomes increasingly erratic, our gardens are facing more
7:30 pm - 9 pm challenges than ever. Bri Petersen, of Urban Gardening Canada, will discuss the changes we can make in our gardens to better plan for and withstand weather events. In addition, Bri will educate us about ways to garden with the planet in mind, and turn our carbon footprint into an ecological footprint.

Getting a Head Start on the Growing Season by Rob Stuart - February is a great time to start making spring plans for your garden. Rob will be joining us to share his extensive experience in the preparation and timing of growing your own annuals from seed in anticipation of summer. He will also cover the types of soil, pots, watering, light and temperatures required, as well as how to grow your seedlings and how to harden them off.
After the presentation, members will have the opportunity to pot a few annual seeds with seeds and potting soil supplied by the Club.
